You'll be on your way to North America in just a few short months, maybe for the very first time. You’ve certainly spent a lot of time collecting the required documents to ensure your acceptance, but unfortunately, you haven't done it yet. There are still many steps to be taken before you can enjoy your time abroad. We have created a pre-departure guide for international students to Canada that has been approved by the Government of Canada to assist you!

Checklist:

  • First and foremost, make sure to accept your letter of offer if you haven't already done so! If you have any questions about this, please contact the EIEC or your host school.
  • Ensure that you have a valid passport. Check to see if it is valid for at least six months after your date of return. If you do not have a passport, you should apply for one immediately.
  • It is essential to check the documentation necessary to enter Canada. You may need to present these at your arrival.
  • Track the price of flights and book the most convenient plane. You could recommend a travel agent if you don't know how to book a flight yourself.
  • When you book a return flight, we suggest a flexible flight ticket, as the dates can change and you may want to depart at a later or earlier time. This way you will avoid additional fees.
  • Travel insurance is important if you have any issues during your travel time. This can be purchased separately from or at the same time as your flight ticket.
  • In addition to travel insurance, health insurance is extremely important. The school can tell you, however it is best to confirm.
  • If you don't already understand, the timing of international flights is different from that of regional flights. It is suggested that you arrive for your flight at least three hours before departure to avoid any potential baggage drop-off and security line-ups or other issues. You are likely to be able to check-in for your flight 24 hours in advance online.
  • Be aware of the restrictions on entry into Canada
  • Certain items are restricted or prohibited from entering Canada, such as tobacco, firearms, food, alcohol, animal and plant products and drugs. Any liquid that you may have with you must be in a container of 100 ml or less and packed in a plastic bag.
  • Border officers also inquire about your housing. Please ensure that you know this information, including your address, contact name and number.
  • We recommend that you have some Canadian cash on you when you arrive in case you have to pay for public transport, a cab, or simply need to be replenished.
  • We recommend that you have some Canadian cash on you when you arrive in case you have to pay for public transport, a cab, or actually need to be refilled.
  • Important documents include your passport, flight ticket, travel and health insurance, Canadian letter of receipt, accommodation information, proof of funds, college records, Canadian citizenship letter (for some).
  • Consider exploring your destination before you arrive. This is the exciting part of your pre-departure journey! Things to do, what the weather might be like, stuff to pack, etc.
  • If you have some spare time, practice your English communication skills. The more you practice, the better. In most cases, reality is quite different from what you learn in books. This is the final step in our guide for international students to Canada.
